Charming Characteristics

• Black nose to center of head

• Black encompassing eye area connecting to black nose

• Black ears should meet the white of the head

• Black hooves & ankle area creating black sock

• Black spots on knees & hocks

• Females must have black spot on tail

• Males must not have tail spot

• Male scotum must be black

• Spiral-shaped twisted horns 

Initial steps in the breed up program include purchasing foundation ewes. It is highly recommended that you use Scottish Blackface ewes for this purpose as they have many similar traits you will be breeding for.

Once you have obtained your foundation ewes you will want to seek out Maximum Point Genetics semen that will be artificially inseminated into your ewes. The breed up process is as follows:

F1 - (50% Valais Blacknose)

F2 - (75% Valais Blacknose)

F3 - (88% Valais Blacknose)

F4 - (94% Valais Blacknose)

F5 - (97% Valais Blacknose)

Valais Blacknose sheep (VBS) find their origins in the Valais region of Switzerland beginning in 5000 BC. Valais was a poor region of Switzerland and the sheep were an important source of food, clothing and money for the farmers. The sheep were loved by the Valais people- and still are.

In Switzerland, the VBS are known for being hardy mountain breed, grazing the steepest slopes of the Alps. They are known for lambing easily and their

offspring grow rapidly. The breed is dual use, both for meat and producing coarse carpet grade wool with fibers having an average micron of 38 in mature sheep. The wool is of excellent felting quality.
